News from the office:

In the past the office have always send out invoices, receipts and membership cards to Saslha members. This year the process was slowed down considerably, because of various administration issues. One major issue is to allocate the payments to the right member and there is an urgent request for the future to always use your membership number as reference, with any payment that is made to Saslha. Thank you for all of your patience and those of you who are still waiting, for especially the membership cards, it will be in the mail as soon as possible. Meanwhile you are welcome to contact Carol at the office for any query regarding membership issues.

Medunsa Speech, Language Pathology and Audiology Department

The training of Speech, Language and Hearing Therapy students at Medunsa needs your support. SASLHA contacted Mrs. Maggie Tshule, the head of the department, and offered the support of the professional association for the venture. The Department started in 2001 with the support of funding from the United States Agency for Development (USAID) under the Tertiary Education Linkages Project (TELP). This funding facilitated a linkage programme between Medunsa and the University of Massachussetts.

Ms.Tshule welcomed SASLHA’s enquiry about the needs of her department and the students. She expressed a view that this proposed support from the wider speech and hearing community was long overdue. She was grateful that the present SASLHA office recognizes their responsibility including the students and staff of this programme in the development of the profession.

The department is currently training 11 fourth year students and has a total of 43 students in the department. Staff, equipment and books remain a challenge. If any Speech, Language or Hearing Therapists have equipment or books which they are willing to donate to the department, or if you live in the area and are willing to become involved in teaching or supervision of students please contact Maggie on 012 521 4249/ 083 6753565 or at tshule@medunsa.ac.za

The department continues to receive support from ASHA (American Speech and Hearing Association) members, and as a continuing act of support for the department, the ASHA Director for Advocacy and Research, Dr Sharon Moss a specialist in adult neurogenic language disorders, visited the country during the month of July-August 2004. Dr Moss will present a seminar for the profession at Medunsa during her visit.

The teaching programme and the department were recently audited for accreditation purposes, and the very good reports received should result in the accreditation of the course shortly. The students, who will be graduating at the end of this year, will need the support of the qualified therapists in the community and we therefore appeal to any willing therapists to “Adopt-a-Community therapist” by contacting the Medunsa department at 012-5214249.
